Old Persons Grant / Old Age Pension

The Old Persons Grant / Old Age Pension is administered by your local SASSA office (South African Social Security Agency).

If you are a South African citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee of 60 years or older and you have no other means of financial income you may be eligible for the Older Persons Grant / State old-age pension.

Furthermore you must live in South Africa, you are not living in a state institution and you are not receiving income from other social grants.


Financial Requirements


At the time of writing (01/01/2021) you must meet the follwing financial requirements according to the "means test". If you are married you must earn less than R13,020 per month (R156,240 per year) and your combined total assets must be below R2,230,800. If you are single you must earn less than R6,510 per month (R78,120 per year) and your combined total assets must be below R1,115,400.

As of April 2020, the Old Persons Grant is Rand 1,860 per month.

If you are 75 years or older it is Rand 1,860 per month.

In the case that you are sick or too old to visit the SASSA office, you can designate a friend or family member to apply on your behalf.

This friend or family member needs to have a letter from you (the applicant) and/or a doctor's note stating that you are not able to visit the office yourself.
