How to apply for a passport

1. Complete a DHA-73 form at your nearest DHA - Home Affairs office.

2. Make sure you bring your official ID-card or birth certificate for children under 16 years.

3. Have your fingerprints taken at the DHA - Home Affairs office.

4. Confirm with your Home Affairs office if you need to bring your own passport photos or if they are using the new biometric application system.


In South Africa there are different kind of passports namely:

Tourist passport, Child passport, Official passports, Emergency travel certificates, Document for travel purposes.

Passport Renewal or Application Online

1. Register Online
Register at the eHomeAffairs registration page and fill in the requested information. You need to create a profile, answer security questions and a password. After confirmation to your cell-phone you need to upload a copy of your id.

2. Payment
You need an online bankaccount with Nedbank, Standard Bansk, FNB or ABSA. Login to your eHomeAffairs page and follow all instructions after which you send your reference number and proof of payment to the Department of Home Affairs.


3. Biometrics
Visit your nearest Home Affairs office or one of the affiliated bank branches to register your photograph, two thumbprints and a signature. You need to take proof of identification. Check beforehand if you need an appointment.

4. Pick up passport
You will receive a notification within 10 days via email and SMS from the branch where your biometrics were taken.
