Foster Child Grant

The Foster Child Grant is administered by your local SASSA office (South African Social Security Agency).

To be eligible both you and the foster child must be resident in South Africa at the time of making the application.

The foster child must be under the age of 18 years old.

Furthermore there must an order of the court stating that you as the foster parent(s) have officially been designated the child's foster carer in terms of the Child Care Act.


Financial Requirements


Eligible people do have to meet certain financial requirements as the "means test". The "means-test" for the Foster Child grant depends only on the income of the foster child. The income in a year of the foster child must be less than two times the annual amount of the foster child grant.

As of April 2020, the Foster Child Grant is Rand 1,040 per month. If you want to recieve the grant the child must live with you in South Africa, must be under the age of 18 and you must be the primary care giver.

As the South African courts usually appoint foster parents for a 2-year period the grant is usially given for 2 years only.

After 2 years, children are often placed with other foster parents, adopted or returned to their parents.

If this is not the case a social worker has the ability to extend the grant depending circumstances..
