Disability Grant

To be eligible for the disablity grant you must be a South African citizen between the age of 18 and 59 years and have the status by a medical officer of medically or physically unfit for work.

The disability grant on a temporary basis is for between 6 and 12 months or you can get a grant on a permanent basis.

In the case of a temporary grant at expiration you need to apply again if your situation is not changed. A permanent disability grant can be reviewed on an ongoing basis.


Financial Requirements


At the time of writing (01/01/2021) you must meet the follwing financial requirements according to the "means test". If you are married your combined income cannot exceed R13,020 per month (R156,240 per year). If you are single you must earn less than R6,510 per month (R78,120 per year) and combined assets must be less than R2,230,800.

As of April 2020, the Disability Grant is Rand 1,860 per month.

Furthermore, the recipient of the disability grant cannot have any other grants, and must not be cared for in a state institution.

The recipient must be medically examined to assess the degree of the disability by a state appointed doctor.

The medical doctor will complete a medical report to forward to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
