How to apply for a smart ID-card in South Africa?

If you want to get a new Smart ID (Identity) card and you want to apply in person you visit your nearest Department of Home Affairs (DHA) office. If you want to apply online you can do this through the eHome Affairs website. You can also apply through selected bank branches countrywide.

How long does it take?

If you meet all the requirements it will take no more than 14 working days to get you smart id-card. After application the DHA will let you know when you can pick up your card.


How to collect the ID card?


Every applicant have to pick up the card in person at the office where they applied. Smart ID Cards can not be delivered or couriered to your address.

Apply through a selected bank branch

1. First check with your bank branch if they are a selected bank for the issue of smart id-cards.
2. You need to have internet banking with one of the selected banks.
3. Go to the Home Affairs (DHA) website to register. Then sign in to conduct the online application form.
4. Pay the application fee for your Smart ID via internet banking.
5. Visit your bank branch to scan your fingerprints and have your pictures taken.
6. DHA will let you know when your card is ready. Go to your bank branch and collect your Smart ID-card.


What is the price of a Smart ID?

The Smart ID Card is free of charge for the 16year-old children who are first time applicants.

The price for all other applicants is R140.00 (price at time of writing, 30-01-2021)
