How to apply for social security

You can apply for different social security grants at the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

Applications can be done online or at your nearest SASA office for the folowing grants: Child Support, Social Relief of Distress, Disability, Foster Child, Older Persons/Senior Citizen, Grant-In-Aid, Care Dependency and War Veterans Grant.

When you apply for a social grant you need to be a South African citizens, a permanent resident or have refugee status and you also need to be currently living in South Africa.


Apply online

Child Support, Older persons grant and Foster child grant applications can also be done online. This online-service can be done on a mobile phone or a computer. To use the online-service, you must provide a valid email address to sign up.

Your assets and income

To be eligable SASSA will check your current assets and income. This is called the "Means test". Through the means test the value of your assets and income will be appraised agains the maximum requirements for each individual grant you apply for.

When your assets and/or income fall below a certain threshold you can be eligable for a specific grant. The maximum allowed is different per grant and will also depend on your marital status.

For some grants you also may not receive the maximum amount offered by the Social Security Agency.


Sassa Card

When your social grant application is approved you will receive a bank account and a Sassa card on which your grant-money will be deposited each month. The Sassa card is also a debit card (MasterCard). You can use it to withdraw cash or to make purchases.
